Prescription Drug Plans
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, also called Part D Plans, is an optional drug coverage benefit offered to everyone who is eligible for and has Medicare. The most common type of plan that is provided is called a PDP plan, which adds drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.
Each Medicare drug plan must give at least a standard level of coverage set by Medicare. Plans can vary the list of prescription drugs they cover (called a formulary) and how they place drugs into different “tiers” on their formularies.
Considerations for Prescription Drug Plans
- Depending on the drugs and medications you take, whether they are all name brand or have a number of generic drugs, can affect the value based on your regular intake.
- You may want extra protection from rising costs of prescription drugs.
- Peace of mind in the event you will need to begin taking any number of drugs, especially those that might end up requiring substantial costs.
